Subject: A nuclear future.
Subject: A nuclear future.
Watch "When the Wind Blows" if you've not seen it-scared straight is far from the most effective of techniques. Besides, the individuals that will see
...
this are none of those with any influence over what happens.
We're out of options. You can't drain every last drop of oil from the Earth-There's simply no way that people are prepared to make the necessary sacrifices for alternative sources of energy to suffice. Advances in Reactors and related technology are astonishing-We're beginning to learn the truth about the true scale of events like Chernobyl, Windscale and 3 Mile Island. I was an activist who poured cement down McDonald's toilets, sold "The Socialist Worker" on city streets, a member of CND-but during lock-down I taught myself particle physics. If we want to survive, this is the only way. BUT America MUST sign and adhere to the non-proliferation treaties that every other nation has signed. The same nation that wanted to place "Rods from God" in space-literally hanging that unthinkable threat over any nation that dare offend/shame them or expose any of their despicable deeds-It's only a matter of time with that government.

Nobody cares about who wins or loses, there are no stories of heroic survivors rallying people and making progress to recovery. Everything is about survival

and nothing else. This is the reality we will face should the bomb ever drop IRL.

This film first aired on the tv, back in the eighties, yes it’s meant to be warts and all, as the protester in the film says, nobody wins a nuclear war,
...
l have had some personal dealings with Government bodies who deal in so called civil defence, they sicken me, l have this on dvd, but it’s not a good thing to watch if depressed, it pops up on utube, time and time, before it gets removed, although l believe it should be shown to everyone, The future, !

This is my favorite film of all time, something that sticks with you long after your first viewing of it, it's hard to explain the feelings this film invokes

other than just pure, unadulterated despair. I cannot recommend this movie enough.

Whenever I hear the wind howl a certain way, I think of Ruth. I was 12 when I first watched Threads. In the film, Ruth was 18.
For a while, her story scared ... me; but it has scarred me to this day.
The movie's message was simple - the only thing worse than dying in a nuclear exchange is not dying.
We saw horrific deaths - people and animals vaporised, incinerated, burned or crushed; we watched those who died slowly and painfully of radiation sickness, and those who starved to death. But much worse than any of this was the prospect for those who kept on living.
We follow Ruth from about a month before the bombs drop, when she is a pregnant teenager planning her life as a parent and young wife, to fifteen years after the attack. It's not pretty.
When I watched it, I thought how terrible a nuclear war would be. But in truth, it's just how all wars are for those who cannot fight and cannot get out of the warzone.
The film is not perfect, but it is bleak and awfully brilliant. There are no heroes, there is no enemy. Surviving until tomorrow only guarantees one more day of abject, unrelenting misery and suffering. And then you'll die.
5 stars. Well worth a watch.

Subject: Second viewing for me.
First seen while still available on Youtube. A few niggles: when convenient some buildings still intact, including windows; Ruth's daughter has fillings
...
in her molars; when fall-out is still an immediate hazard, soldiers are patrolling without protection; radiation sickness seems to have left some survivors alone completely; starving people look remarkably well fed.
One amusing point with modern resonance: trade unionist calling for general strike claims he is patriotic: "I've been trying to get us out of the Common Market for years!"

Subject: Horrific reality of Nuclear war
Threads, filmed in Sheffield (my home city) in 1984 presents a warts and all view of the horrors of nuclear war and its aftermath.
Writer Barry Hines and ... director Mick Jackson deserve recognition for coming up with this movie. If you're not yet awake to the insanity of nuclear conflict, you will be after watching this movie.
I first saw this movie back in the 80's when I was in my 20's. I watched it again today (June 2023) and it still packs a mean punch in the guts.
Most nuclear war movies leave you with a glimmer of hope for the future, but Threads doesn't. It is raw and real and not for the faint hearted. It should be compulsory viewing for everyone, particularly those who believe that an all out nuclear war can have winners.

it but it left a lasting impression on me. For years i figured this was the outcome I would see and even now I am not sure it will not end like this. The thing is now it wouldn't even play out like this, it would just be complete destruction as I am sure it would have actually been back in 84.

future. For the past few years I believed that I would die before mankind destroyed itself. Now, I'm not so sure. This movie is fantastic and came out in the United Kingdom before the US film "The Day After". This film is much more of a reality than "The Day After". I highly recommend this film, Threads.
